New Loft Bed

My baby is growing up!

He spent last night in his new big boy bed for the first time.

David will be four in a few months, and we thought it was time to move him out of his toddler bed. His room is small, so I suggested rather than just a regular twin bed we get him a loft bed. We looked around some stores and catalogs, and discovered that loft beds can be expensive. So my husband Dave decided instead of purchasing a bed, he’d make it. I think he did a wonderful job.

The room is so small I couldn’t get back far enough to get the whole bed in the picture.

There’s still some touch-up painting to be done. We also need to replace the ceiling fan with a regular light. I can just see David trying to take a ride on the fan. And I need to find a new bedspread. I did get sheets and a mattress cover yesterday, but I had a hard time tracking them down. It must be back to college week, because all the stores I went to were almost completely sold out of twin size bedding.

A lot of the bed is made from stuff we had lying around already. The headboard, foot board and frame are actually pieces from an old bed. And Dave was able to use some wood and screws leftover from other projects.

Once the bed was finished, I made curtains to hang around the bottom of the bed. The curtains conceal toys stored underneath, and make a nice fort for David to play in.

I am not a very good seamstress, but the curtains turned out OK. As long as you don’t look to closely at the crooked seams.

I had to show you a picture of my sewing machine.

Yep. It’s duct taped together. Even though I rarely use it, somehow the the latch the holds on the door to access the bobbin compartment broke off.

Anyway, David loves his new bed. He’s spent all morning climbing in and out of it, and playing under it.

I really did get a little misty-eyed last night as Dave dismantled the toddler bed to store in the basement. David’s crib converted into that toddler bed, so until last night he’d slept the whole of his young life in that bed.

I guess I’m just feeling a little sentimental.

Today it’s a new bed, tomorrow he’ll be off to college.

Don’t get too comfortable with the ceiling fan there. It is too tempting for a four year old boy to be that close to something spinning so fast and NOT see what happens when something hits the blade. Fun times!!!!

lol…ceiling fans were always fun when we were kids… i think we broke 2 or 3 of them!

……great bed! wish my hubby could do that!
